The guide
The supporting information section, also called the supporting statement, is where most NHS applications are won or lost. Here's what shortlisting panels look for, whether you use Scrubmyo or write it yourself.
It's the free-text section of your NHS Jobs or Trac application where you show how you meet the job. Adverts call it supporting information, a supporting statement or a personal statement, and they all mean the same thing. It isn't a cover letter or a CV summary. Its only job is to prove you meet the criteria in the person specification.
Shortlisters work through the person specification one criterion at a time and look for evidence for each one. A criterion you don't mention scores nothing, however experienced you are. The strongest statements follow the person spec in order: a short opening, then evidence for each essential and desirable criterion, then a brief closing line.
There's no single rule. NHS Jobs allows up to 5,000 characters in each criteria box, and Trac and trust forms set their own limits. Always follow the limit on your form, and cover every essential criterion first.
Skip the life story. Open with two or three sentences: the role, what you do now, and why this role at this trust. Then go straight to the first criterion.
Example"I am applying for the Band 3 Healthcare Assistant role on your acute medical ward. For the past two years I have worked as a senior carer in a nursing home, and I want to bring that experience to a hospital setting."The NHS Constitution has six values. They are working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives, and everyone counts. Many trusts use their own words for these, so use the words in your job description. Don't just list values. Show one in action, such as protecting a patient's dignity during personal care.
Leave out your name, photo and personal links, because shortlisting is often anonymous. Also leave out patient names or identifiable details, adjectives with no evidence behind them ("hard-working, passionate"), skills you haven't used, and anything reused from an old statement without tailoring it to this advert.
